Give Em What They Love : Summer Solstice 2014

PC-95

By popular request, here is a
New Music Blend that gathers together some of the best tunes that have been bumping out of The Podcast Cafe this summer: fresh tracks from old favorites like The Black Keys, Ray LaMontagne, Natalie Merchant, Jack White and Beck, alongside new discoveries like Chet Faker, Ayla Nereo and tUnE-yArDs, seasoned with a sprinkling of EDM cuts (curated by DJ Playaduster of Destination Burning Man) from The Polish Ambassador, Halo Refuser and Gramatik. This mix has been getting heavy play in our backyard beer garden, inspiring sing-alongs, making out and danceparties on more than one occasion!

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band opened for Widespread Panic during their two-night stand at The Joint in Las Vegas, NV on July 12-13, 2013. Of course, several of the horn players from the Dirty Dozen joined Panic onstage to help them jam out some of their funky, bluesy, swampy, git-down tunes. This mix collects all nine songs that the boys collaborated on, sharing some of the mightiest, most epic WSMFP I've heard in a very long time!

Harvest Moon

Hard to believe but this marks our 80th episode here at the Podcast Cafe! That is a hell of a lot of music mixes streaming in to your home, your ears, your mind, your soul, and its been nothing but a pleasure to serve up the freshest blends for the people since 2007.

With autumn in full effect here in the Pacific Northwest, we concocted up a Harvest Moon mix, conceived of on the full moon earlier this month. It features highlights of some really, really good recent releases we've been enjoying lately, albums that no doubt will be populating our Favorites of 2012 list at the end of the year. The styles and genres vary, but as per usual, DJ Fundi has deftly blended them together into this smooth cocktail of mostly-mellow sounds (with some surprising exceptions, of course) —an inspired session blending the old with the new in a journey of sound, lyric & song. From acoustic to glitch, blues to grunge, americana folk to hipster anthems.

Pour up another hot toddy — we recommend grinding your own cinnamon fresh — and enjoy!

Spring Buds 2: Bodhisattva Vow

"I give thanks for this world as a place to learn
and for this human body that I'm glad to have earned
and my deepest thanks to all sentient beings
for without them there would be no place to learn what I'm seeing.”

--"Bodhisattva Vow,” MCA

Spring Buds 2 offers a meandering musical journey through new muzikz we've acquired over the past few weeks: freshness, green growth, sprouts, spring buds. Smoke em if you got em! (Spring Buds 1 from 2007 is available here.)

This mix features new tracks from Floratone (Bill Frisell & Matt Chamberlain) * Father John Misty * Jimmy Cliff * Dub Is a Weapon * Rusko * Quantic * Santigold * The Shins * The Black Keys * Andrew Bird * Amadou & Mariam * The Decemberists * Bonnie Raitt with Bill Frisell & Greg Leisz * Alabama Shakes * Beach House * Josh Ritter * Beastie Boys * Damian Jurado * An-ten-ae * Horsefeathers * M. Ward * Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros //

I didn’t make this musical mix specifically for anybody or any particular reason, but in the last few weeks of putting the final touches on it, a number of very special people passed on to the Great Gig in the Sky:
MCA of the Beastie Boys, Doc Watson and then, just yesterday, two artist-musician-circus performers that were friends of friends. Drew Keriakedes (aka "Shmootzi the Clod”) and Joseph Albanese (aka “Meshuguna Joe”) were gunned down in a coffee shop in Seattle in an act of horrific and senseless violence. They were bright lights in the rainy city, and their warmth, generosity, freedom and love touched many, many people. Though I never met them, they meant a lot to some close friends who are now grieving, and I can feel the heartbreaking loss to the close-kn it community. I decided to dedicate this mix -- which offers a few appropriate songs, including the Beasties “Bodhisattva Vow” and M. Ward’s “Pure Joy” -- to the memory of the light of all four performers….

Widespread Panic * Highlights from the 25th Anniversary Shows * 2/10/11

F
or your jamtastic listening pleasure, DJ Fundi has put together a 2-part mix featuring highlights of the recent Widespread Panic 25th anniversary shows at the Classic Center in Atlanta, GA. This episode features my favorite moments from the February 10, 2011 show -- we’ll post highlights from the following night next week. I know that purists will be horrified to hear a Panic show edited and blended in this fashion, but oh well -- one can purchase the shows in their glorious entirety at www.livewidespreadpanic.com. Get ready for some amazing jams, funky grooves and southern soul in these transmissions, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Panic is sounding frickin’ awesome 25 years later...no small feat. Interesting to note that Panic opened up their very first show with Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” 25 years ago (almost to the day) at the Mad Hatter Ballroom on 2/6/86!

Track listing: For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield; first since 11/22/88), You’ll Be Fine (first since 11/12/01), Proving Ground, Arleen (with Randall Bramblett on saxophone) > Drums > Fire on the Mountain (Grateful Dead; first since 10/2/88) > Space Wrangler > Coconut, Bowlegged Woman, Heaven (Talking Heads).

Here’s a review of the 2-night stand, from Honest Tune: The Southern Journal of Jam:

“How many bands can you think of that have made it 25 years, continuing to enamor their fans?  The first groups that likely come to mind are bands as highly regarded as the Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band, or the Rolling Stones; both of whom have persevered through the loss of key members, addiction, health issues, and an ever changing standard of what is considered "good" music.  The lesser known Widespread Panic is a recent addition to this list and in their 25 years together, they have experienced momentous highs and endured through unthinkable lows.  To the delight of a nation of devoted fans, "The Boys" who met in Athens, GA back in 1986 chose to celebrate the occasion by playing three unforgettable shows at two historic venues.”

The Mystery Zone : New Music 6

Here in the darkest depths of winter, having reached full saturation, DJ Fundi throws down a sidetrip set that explores a thick stack of recent musical acquisitions. It's a casual night here at the Podcast Cafe, not too many people out and about on these drizzly nights, but we've got a fire goin' in the hearth, frothy beverages and musical terrain to explore together.

Thing is, Fundi has barely if at all listened to most of these releases, so he's spinning on intuition and belief in the beauty of randomness, often picking tracks simply by a title that tickled his fancy. Some of it will be good, some great, but it is the spirit of the journey that matters most : a deep-diving musical safari over the landscape of new music discovered here in the winter doldrums of February 2010.

This mix features several double-shots from albums that are too laden with goodies to pick just one (The Bird and the Bee's new record is so juicy they scored an unbelievable quadruple-shot of selections.) DJ Fundi recorded this mostly on-the-fly, with minimal edits and no overdubs or fancy sonic trickery.

Such a blessing to have so much varied music to explore and engage all our lives, our musical tastes evolving as we ourselves evolve, learning and growing to the tempo of a reliable groove.

Winter Solstice 2009 Retrospective

Our annual look back at the year in music, spinning tunes that have inspired, perplexed, soothed, challenged and/or forced us to shake our booty and reprogram our bass chakra protocols. DJ Fundi is joined here and there by his compadre/alter ego DJ Playaduster -- you'll know when Playaduster takes over the decks. Because 2009 was such a strong year for music making -- is there more good music then ever before, or simply more ease of access via the interwebs and iTunes? -- this session clocks in just shy of 2 hours, so you best get yerself comfortable with a warm winter beverage in hand.

"Winter Solstice 2009 Retrospective" includes selections by The xx, Andrew Bird, Beirut, Phoenix, Neko Case, Built to Spill, Dirty Projectors, Bon Iver, Fever Ray, Heyoka, Bassnectar, ill.gates, Welder, The Mountain Goats, Iron & Wine, Grizzly Bear, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Yim Yames, The Avett Brothers, Joker, DJ Rupture, Zero 7, M. Ward, Tinariwen, Nirvana and Andras Schiff paying Bach. You can read my full list of Top 10 albums, honorable mentions and biggest disappointments on

Here's to new musical frontiers in 2010~

djfundi@podcastcafe.org

The Lighthouse Keeper : New Music 5

The Cave Singers, Built to Spill and Pearl Jam open this mix with a triple blast of Northwest moody rock juju.

From the fourth corner, we travel outwards over a diverse terrain of tracks, most of which are new on the scene from the past month or so. Several are lifted from the "Dark Was the Night" double-album, which I highly recommend you purchase (proceeds go to AIDS research and prevention via the Red Hot Organization.)

Bon Iver, Kid Cudi with Ratatat, Modest Mouse, Monsters of Folk, Sharon Jones & the Dapp Kings, Fever Ray with Bassnectar, Feist with Ben Gibbards, The Decemberists, David Byrne with Brian Eno, Beats Antique, M. Ward, Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine, Thom Yorke, Yim Yames and Q-Tip are the elements of this mix, which skews heavily towards
man-rock and beard-folk for some unknown reason. As it turns out, Sharon Jones and the Fever Ray singer are the one female representatives here -- they holds their own, I'd say.

I'd like to close by quoting Built to Spill from a new song, "Things Fall Apart," which I think are some of the most authentic lyrics I've heard in years:

"We've all seen enough, now it's time to decide
The meekness of love or the power of pride
It doesn't matter if you're good or smart
God damn it, things fall apart

Let's go for a walk. yeah, let's go for a drive
Don't know how to say, thanks for being alive
Let's go for a lifetime. let's go for a fling
Don't know how to say anything"
