Rain Return

Screen Shot 2015-09-05 at 6.47.03 PM

It's been a very interesting week here in the Pacific Northwest, home of the Podcast Cafe : raging wildfires, air full of smoke and ash, then a giant storm on the day of the Full Moon bringing torrential rains and winds strong enough to topple trees and knock out power at the cafe. In the midst of all this elemental power, raw force of nature and dramatic upheaval, we lit some candles, opened the cafe to our neighbors and spun out this nearly-2-hour mix of newish music that has been tickling our earholes here in late Summer. It is, mind you, our 99th episode!

"Rain Return" features a bunch of cafe regulars like Wilco, Beck, Built to Spill, Father John, Beirut, Kurt Vile and Laura Marling, while also bringing is some new friends that we'd love for you to meet, like Courtney Barnett, Yaima, SaQi, Hot Chip, Subaqueous and Pepper Proud. DJ Fundi gets things started off, while DJ Playaduster steps in midway through to blend in some new, groovy sounds from the world of electronica and sacred bass music, before handing back to Fundi to wrap things up and tuck us in. The journey ends with a fitting track, "The Long Awaited Rains....."

Hope y'all enjoy and thanks for dropping by the Podcast Cafe!

Give Em What They Love : Summer Solstice 2014

PC-95

By popular request, here is a
New Music Blend that gathers together some of the best tunes that have been bumping out of The Podcast Cafe this summer: fresh tracks from old favorites like The Black Keys, Ray LaMontagne, Natalie Merchant, Jack White and Beck, alongside new discoveries like Chet Faker, Ayla Nereo and tUnE-yArDs, seasoned with a sprinkling of EDM cuts (curated by DJ Playaduster of Destination Burning Man) from The Polish Ambassador, Halo Refuser and Gramatik. This mix has been getting heavy play in our backyard beer garden, inspiring sing-alongs, making out and danceparties on more than one occasion!

Sacred Bass Sessions Vol. 1 : Beyond the Dream Dome (for Sabbahji)

SacredB_3

Mixed by Kaya Rainface at the Purple Palace, November 2013

The Podcast Cafe is excited to introduce The Sacred Bass Sessions, a new series of intentional gatherings in Bellingham / Cascadia. Produced in partnership with Boogie Universal and Destination Burning Man, these sessions are envisioned to be a series of transformational events based around electronic music, community engagement and freedom of expression.

This musical mix by
dBM's Kaya Rainface is a soundtrack for our vision of Sacred Bass Sessions, like a mission statement, as well as a map to the subconscious nooks and crannies of your mind. It features music from the West Coast's finest DJs, producers and sound shamans, artists we either have already booked to play an upcoming SBS or are actively pursuing. The low-end mystical flow is deeply inspired by Rainface's time spent in the DreamDome at Photosynthesis 6 this past summer.

Just before releasing this mix, we synthesized a spur-of-the-moment tribute to Cheb i Sabbah at the conclusion of the audio journey, in honor of his passing on November 7. As we listened to this mix that evening, we could clearly hear Sabbahji's influence in every track, his musical legacy informing the current crop of Sacred Bass DJs who carry forward his global-galactic grooves for the next leg of the journey.

track list // itom lab "Galactic Mantra" + The Bells of Sh'ang Sh'ung / Subaqueous "Invoking (eO remix) > In Spire > Cryptic (Michael Manahan remix) / Osiris "Immersion > Soul Diver" / Drumspyder "Caduceus" / itom lab "Brahmin" / Plantrae "Primary Decomposers" / GUDA "Riparian Toadschool" / eO "Lilt" / Kyrstyn Pixton "Dolphin's Pipe" / Cheb i Sabbah "Durga Puja" (Rainface Redub) / eO "Sussurus" / Bass Chakra Therapy outro //

What the Mixtape?! (Side Two)

Cross-posted from our sister site Destination Burning Man — an intriguing and delicious mix of EDM from DJ Playaduster originally posted 8/12/12!

Greetings friends near and far, met and unmet, DJ Playaduster here representing Destination Burning Man with Side Two of What the Mixtape?!

Get yourself ready for a hour long mix of electronic music based on DJs and producers who played at
What the Festival?! in Oregon the last weekend of July 2012. This was the best festival my PNW Get Found crew and I have ever experienced off the playa and the rush of inspiration we felt in the White River canyon has carried over in to this 2 side music mix tape project. From the environment to the art to the people to the lighting to the vibes to the splash pool and ESPECIALLY to the expertly curated schedule of to-notch DJs, the organizers did it right. We can't thank them enough for all the special touches, large and small.

We're going to explore some of the more experimental bass frequencies that What the Festival offered, including Sepalcure, Scuba and Sinjin Hawke, taste some acid crunk from Low Ryderz, get soothed with a long set from Emancipator and dabble in some forward-leaning low-end wavelengths from Gladkill, Bluetech, PhuturePrimitive and Sugarpill.

What the Mixtape?! (Side One)

Cross-posted from our sister site Destination Burning Man — an intriguing and delicious mix of EDM from DJ Playaduster originally posted 8/3/12!

We're just back from the first-ever
What the Festival?! in the White River Canyon of Oregon and are so incredibly inspired by what went down there: an eclectic roster of top-shelf DJ talent dropping their jams through Function One soundsystems, the gorgeous landscape accentuated by art and light installations, lots of chill spaces full of kind and creative people, good food, minimal security and hilarious pool parties during the heat of the day – we can’t say enough good things about this gathering and the team that put it on. Big ups to the Zanzibar crew for pulling this off so flawlessly, and to my own Get Found family for representing the love.

<< Have dBMcasts automatically delivered to you hot & fresh by subscribing via iTunes >>

Side one of What the Mixxtape?! features some of the artists I saw and danced my ass off to, with a focus on the glitch-hop, dubstep, acid crunk, whomp and other soundz from the heavier end of the Bass Chakra spectrum, including Bonobo, Beats Antique, GRiZ, Gladkill, Ana Sia, MartyParty, Sugarpill, EPROM and Paper Diamond. Next week I’ll put out Side 2 with sounds trending house, ambient, experimental and sacred bass.

With 29 days until the Man burns, fevered excitement is in the air. I hope this What the Mixxtape?!, along with other recent episodes like
Desert Dreamers and Shimmer, provide you the ultimate soundtrack for your playa preparations.

Electric Frogsong

Hard to describe what holds this set of tunes together -- DJ Fundi spun it out mostly in one night based on intuition, chance and and trusting in the process of fateful detours. The results are a tapestry of soundscapes and textures from a wide variety of genres, including jazz, electronica, hip-hop instrumentals, lo-fi, Americana folk and…a touchdown in to some Muppet territory. While it may look strange on paper, take the journey and trust in the sound-selekting powers of DJ Fundi.

Chiron Transmission 1 : Golgotha

Greetings from the friendly Burners here at Destination Burning Man, and welcome to the latest mix from DJ Playaduster: "Chiron Transmissions 1 : Golgotha." Much of this podcast is shrouded in mystery and codes, but it appears to be a missive sent from the outer fringes of our solar system, a musical message that originates from the proto-comet Chiron.
Discovered in 1977 in its eccentric orbit between Saturn and Uranus, Chiron is known in some circles as the "Rainbow Bridge" or "Wounded Healer," a humble, benevolent guide that can assist humans by keeping us moving forward on our proper spiritual paths. In early February 2011, Chiron entered the watery realm of Pisces, activating the pure power of potential, the manifestation of the unconscious and transformative healing through (re)union with the divine.
The frequencies found in this podcast are believed to have originated from Chiron, with DJ Playaduster serving as a musical midwife in order that they be perceived by the human ear and widely disseminated through our dBM channels.
Contributing artists include Bill Laswell, Rena Jones, Phaelah, Tipper, Heyoka, James Blake, Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, DJ/rupture, Kim Hiorthoy, Ezekiel Honig, Yo-Yo Ma, Shackleton, PantyRaid and Thriftworks, with vocal musings from Joni Mitchell, Timothy Leary, Hekter McElliott, Pema Chodron and the Tangerines.

We're still puzzling over this one. Let us know how it hits you and what you perceive at gmail@destinationburningman.com or facebook.com/destinationBM

LOVENESS : Got Found? (Part 2)

We're back on the playa and it's late in the week -- things are moving in synchronicity through deep cosmic channels, new friends have been made, sleep is an afterthought, everything is irreversibly dusty and you love it all. The music you hear throughout the city at night is vibrating through your bass chakras and you don't know where the DJ ends and you begin anymore. In this interpretation, Beats Antique, R/D, Pretty Lights, Kid Kudi and others represent this disorienting but beautiful freakbeat madness.

If you've met a special someone during the week, things may be getting impossibly romantic as the week nears its crescendo. This mix reflects that by veering in to a Tanjalove-inspired pocket of funk and soul healing, grooves that both reflect and enhance the love that is filling your heart to overflowing: "Erotic City", "Take My Heart (You Can Have It)", "Simply Beautiful", "Love to Love You Baby", "You Make Me Smile" and "Sexual Healing." Heavy stuff, for sure, but that's how it is.

On Saturday, the Man falls right around the time that your last bit of protective armor, fear & sadness fall away, and you give in to full
Loveness. A mobile soundsystem, crowned with a glowing, beating heart, plays "Love is in the Air" at the exact moment as the sun rises over the eastern horizon on Sunday morning. Bliss reigns, friends swirl, mimosas bubble, hearts swell and you dissolve in to sunlight with your dusty Beloved in your arms.

Sunday night the Temple is set ablaze and there is
culmination. Sade returns with another take on "Soldier of Love" to show you how far you and your wounded heart have traveled through the week; The Cinematic Orchestra reprises your theme song, "To Build a Home"; Bassnectar & Nelly Furtado conclude the entire affair with a wise reminder: "And I say follow me, follow me, follow me / Down, down, down, down / 'Til you see all my dreams / Not everything in this magical world / is quite what it seems."

Namaste, and thanks for listening. Yours in
LOVENESS, DJ Playaduster

Joyism : Got Found? (Part 1) FIXED

While DJ Fundi is out on sabbatical, we asked our comrades over at DestinationBurningMan.com to share a mix with our listeners that would feed the ears, tantalize the mind and lift the spirits. DJ Playaduster sent this mix over. We think it will work on all accounts. Enjoy! -- The Podcast Cafe

"There is a house built out of stone
Wooden floors, walls and window sills...
Tables and chairs worn by all of the dust..
This is a place where I don't feel alone
This is a place where I feel at home.......

Cause, I built a home
for you
for me

Until it disappeared
from me
from you

And now, it's time to leave and turn to dust…….."

The Cinematic Orchestra open up this musical mix with a beautiful and emotive song that speaks to me in these days and weeks after Burning Man 2010 : "To Build a Home." It has multiple layers of meanings for me and stirs me in places deep down inside.

Sade provides the second track in the "opening statement" of the podcast, livening up the mood with another song that is rich with meaning for me these days. I heard a DJ slyly drop in to a dance party on the playa, and I sang along to the chorus with all the lovely people on the dancefloor at the top of our lungs, "I've been torn up inside (oh!) / I've been left behind (oh!) / So I ride / I have the will to survive. I'm a soldier of love / all the days of my live..."

With those 2 opening salvos behind us, the mix moves in to the first movement... (more after the jumo)

Summersauce Doubleshots

Two tracks each from the musicians I am diggin on the most in this midsummer glory stretch....I expect many of these artists to make Fundi's Best of the Year list in a few months, cuz they so good. I been listening to some of these albums over & over & over again. The songs in this mix are all pretty new except for the Band of Horses tracks -- hitched my wagon to their sounds only recently. Much funk and hip hop, blended with introspective folk and some modern blues.

"Summersauce Doubleshots" features The Roots, Band of Horses, The Black Keys, Janelle Monae, Big Boi, Quantic , Jack Johnson, Bonobo, Aloe Blacc, M.I.A., Flying Lotus, The Tallest Man in the World, Trombone Shorty and Josh Ritter.

Bass Chakra Therapy * The Wobble Chronicles Vol. 1

Editor's note: This podcast is a special rebroadcast from DJ Playaduster and our friends over at www.destinationburningman.com. It features music not normally heard here at the Podcast Cafe -- parlez vous de Whomp? -- and we're pretty sure you're gonna dig it!

This mix is an overview of the electronik sounds I am currently filling my head with, including several DJs I learned about for the first time at Burning Man 2009. Heavy San Francisco emphasis here, naturally, as that is where my favorite grooves are coming from these days. Special guests include Maketa, Scotty G. and Suga Cubed, recorded both in Black Rock City and on the road to home post-Burn, decompressing and reorienting from the Best Burn Ever. This is one of my favorite mixes I've ever spun out -- I really dig the flow between tracks and between sections and the sacred womp of the bass is cleansing to my soul. Hope you dig it too.

Winter Solstice 2009 Retrospective

Our annual look back at the year in music, spinning tunes that have inspired, perplexed, soothed, challenged and/or forced us to shake our booty and reprogram our bass chakra protocols. DJ Fundi is joined here and there by his compadre/alter ego DJ Playaduster -- you'll know when Playaduster takes over the decks. Because 2009 was such a strong year for music making -- is there more good music then ever before, or simply more ease of access via the interwebs and iTunes? -- this session clocks in just shy of 2 hours, so you best get yerself comfortable with a warm winter beverage in hand.

"Winter Solstice 2009 Retrospective" includes selections by The xx, Andrew Bird, Beirut, Phoenix, Neko Case, Built to Spill, Dirty Projectors, Bon Iver, Fever Ray, Heyoka, Bassnectar, ill.gates, Welder, The Mountain Goats, Iron & Wine, Grizzly Bear, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Yim Yames, The Avett Brothers, Joker, DJ Rupture, Zero 7, M. Ward, Tinariwen, Nirvana and Andras Schiff paying Bach. You can read my full list of Top 10 albums, honorable mentions and biggest disappointments on

Here's to new musical frontiers in 2010~

djfundi@podcastcafe.org

The Lighthouse Keeper : New Music 5

The Cave Singers, Built to Spill and Pearl Jam open this mix with a triple blast of Northwest moody rock juju.

From the fourth corner, we travel outwards over a diverse terrain of tracks, most of which are new on the scene from the past month or so. Several are lifted from the "Dark Was the Night" double-album, which I highly recommend you purchase (proceeds go to AIDS research and prevention via the Red Hot Organization.)

Bon Iver, Kid Cudi with Ratatat, Modest Mouse, Monsters of Folk, Sharon Jones & the Dapp Kings, Fever Ray with Bassnectar, Feist with Ben Gibbards, The Decemberists, David Byrne with Brian Eno, Beats Antique, M. Ward, Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine, Thom Yorke, Yim Yames and Q-Tip are the elements of this mix, which skews heavily towards
man-rock and beard-folk for some unknown reason. As it turns out, Sharon Jones and the Fever Ray singer are the one female representatives here -- they holds their own, I'd say.

I'd like to close by quoting Built to Spill from a new song, "Things Fall Apart," which I think are some of the most authentic lyrics I've heard in years:

"We've all seen enough, now it's time to decide
The meekness of love or the power of pride
It doesn't matter if you're good or smart
God damn it, things fall apart

Let's go for a walk. yeah, let's go for a drive
Don't know how to say, thanks for being alive
Let's go for a lifetime. let's go for a fling
Don't know how to say anything"

Now it is time to launch a video project I humbly offer up: "EVOLUTION: Burning Man 2009".. At just under a half-hour in length, this video seeks to celebrate Black Rock City in all of its ephemeral glory as well as commemorate the once-in-a-lifetime quickening of people that came together organically to form Camp Get Found at 3:30 & Lineage. This production utilized the photos and videos of many friends, as well as borrowed footage from Ben Wiggins, Mr. Nightshade and John Chavez. The soundtrack features Random Rab, Welder, ill.Gates, Ezekiel Honig, Nosaj Thing and Shpongle.
