amazing-photographs-14

Greetings friends of The Podcast Cafe — we’re back with another installment in our annual End of the Year Roundup of our favorite music of the year. We already posted "The Thickness: Favorite Music of 2013" a few weeks back, but 2013 offered up a plethora of great tunes and so we had more music to play with. Hope you dig the variety and quality of “Joy: More Favorite Music from 2013.”

The Thickness: Favorite Music of 2013

madiba31

Here's our annual review of the music that most moved, grooved, inspired or soothed us over the past year. As per usual, the Podcast Cafe serves up a diverse and tasty dish, with selections ranging from Americana and folk to funk and groove, rock n roll to an archive release of music recorded more than 50 years ago. Our friend from
Destination Burning Man, DJ Playaduster, joins DJ Fundi here and there to share some of the most original sounds from the world of electronic music too.

This 92nd episode from the Podcast Cafe is dedicated to the example and memory of Nelson Mandela. (The voice samples you'll hear in the mix are from the speech
Madiba gave upon being freed from jail after 27 years.)

We hope you enjoy and Happy New Year!

Sacred Bass Sessions Vol. 1 : Beyond the Dream Dome (for Sabbahji)

SacredB_3

Mixed by Kaya Rainface at the Purple Palace, November 2013

The Podcast Cafe is excited to introduce The Sacred Bass Sessions, a new series of intentional gatherings in Bellingham / Cascadia. Produced in partnership with Boogie Universal and Destination Burning Man, these sessions are envisioned to be a series of transformational events based around electronic music, community engagement and freedom of expression.

This musical mix by
dBM's Kaya Rainface is a soundtrack for our vision of Sacred Bass Sessions, like a mission statement, as well as a map to the subconscious nooks and crannies of your mind. It features music from the West Coast's finest DJs, producers and sound shamans, artists we either have already booked to play an upcoming SBS or are actively pursuing. The low-end mystical flow is deeply inspired by Rainface's time spent in the DreamDome at Photosynthesis 6 this past summer.

Just before releasing this mix, we synthesized a spur-of-the-moment tribute to Cheb i Sabbah at the conclusion of the audio journey, in honor of his passing on November 7. As we listened to this mix that evening, we could clearly hear Sabbahji's influence in every track, his musical legacy informing the current crop of Sacred Bass DJs who carry forward his global-galactic grooves for the next leg of the journey.

track list // itom lab "Galactic Mantra" + The Bells of Sh'ang Sh'ung / Subaqueous "Invoking (eO remix) > In Spire > Cryptic (Michael Manahan remix) / Osiris "Immersion > Soul Diver" / Drumspyder "Caduceus" / itom lab "Brahmin" / Plantrae "Primary Decomposers" / GUDA "Riparian Toadschool" / eO "Lilt" / Kyrstyn Pixton "Dolphin's Pipe" / Cheb i Sabbah "Durga Puja" (Rainface Redub) / eO "Sussurus" / Bass Chakra Therapy outro //

Autumanal Equinox III

fall-orange-mother-nature
The rains have returned in a big way to the wet side of the Cascades mountain range this week, signaling the definitive end of another gorgeous, carefree, playful summer in Ish River Country. We've been keeping summer hours here at the Podcast Cafe, releasing a couple of kick-ass bootleg concerts from the Dead and Panic but otherwise focused on outdoor pursuits.

As the season shifts, the Cafe springs back to life, with customers coming back around looking for steaming bowls of soup, hot toddies, spruce tip martinis and a place next to our blazing hearth. We're excited to welcome the winter weather back, and along with it all things cozy and good.

Here's a mix we've been tinkering with off and on for a month, full of new/recent songs from many of our standby favorites, but with a twist: our buddy
DJ Playaduster from Destination Burning Man.com dropped in midway through our mixing and we decided to let him share some new music from the Realms of Elektronika to spice up the mix. He eases his entry in with the familiar voice of Bon Iver before launching off in to a half-hour journey that makes our heads spin and feet move….before we take back the controls and land the Fundiship back on Planet Earth just in time for dessert at the Cafe with amazing new songs from Mazzy Star (!!!), Pearl Jam and, finally, the sweet strains of Sam Beam.

Hope you all enjoy!

Widespread Panic + Dirty Dozen Brass Band * Las Vegas, July 2013

1013933_10152384477027662_2035875827_n

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band opened for Widespread Panic during their two-night stand at The Joint in Las Vegas, NV on July 12-13, 2013. Of course, several of the horn players from the Dirty Dozen joined Panic onstage to help them jam out some of their funky, bluesy, swampy, git-down tunes. This mix collects all nine songs that the boys collaborated on, sharing some of the mightiest, most epic WSMFP I've heard in a very long time!

Grateful Dead May '77 set one

stealyourface77

An amalgamation of first set songs from the Grateful Dead circa May 1977. These are the best first set nuggets culled from the new box set from Rhino Records, "Five Days in May." Remastered, rebalanced and rejujued, this is the Dead at one of their 4 or 5 musical peaks.

We open with two songs that find the band energetic yet ragged, like a runner bursting out of the gates before the starting bell….
Bertha and Music Never Stopped give them ample opportunity to warm up and start to locate the communal groove.

We then take a tromp through a slew of classic songs that showcase the restraint and complexity of their playing—
Ramble On Rose, Cassidy, Brown-Eyed Women, Jack A Roe —all right in that warm pocket of the groovy, earthy 70s. Listen to Jerry's guitar somehow weave together elements of country, jazz, funk, bluegrass, rock and disco, as if to demonstrate that all American popular music shares a common ancestral rootstock.

Lazy Lightning > Supplication finds the Dead opening up the valves for the first time in to an unrestrained instrumental jam. Flight warning!

By the time we get to
High Time, Jack Straw and Half-Step Mississippi, we are in the presence of a warmed-up band playing honest, heartfelt music that takes in all strands of  American roots music while simultaneously leans in to the future, creating something brand new from shards of the past. The band has found their groove in this twilight of the first set and saunter through the countryfied psychedelic landscapes with an ease bordering on swagger.

Dancin' in the Street brings the parade of set one songs to a rousing, all-on conclusion -- hear the Grateful Dead tease disco, and find both funk and flat-pickin' somewhere deep in that groove.

Grateful Dead Spring 1990 Highlights 2

GD-90-2-2

The Grateful Dead released an excellent box set last fall that highlights their Spring 1990 tour, featuring six complete shows remastered and remojo'd on 18 CDs. Many Deadhead aficionados consider this period to be one of the last great musical peaks for the band, post-In The Dark with Jerry in good health and the band firing on all cylinders night after night. It is also a noteworthy period as these are Brent's last days with the Dead…

DJ Fundi took it upon himself to comb through the more than 20 hours of live Dead recordings found on the new Spring Tour 1990 box set, finding favorite moments, sweet ballads and stellar jams, then blending them together in to this "highlight mix." Its like Fantasy Grateful Dead: pick and choose your own set list, create your dream show! & boogie down! It is sequenced and mixed so as to emulate what you might hear at a show. Lots of Jerry here, as you might imagine, alongside Bobby, Phil and Brent singing their best too. Everyone sounds just great here.

Grateful Dead Spring 1990 Highlights 1

GD-90-1

The Grateful Dead released an excellent box set last fall that highlights their Spring 1990 tour, featuring six complete shows remastered and remojo'd on 18 CDs. Many Deadhead aficionados consider this period to be one of the last great musical peaks for the band, post-In The Dark with Jerry in good health and the band firing on all cylinders night after night. It is also a noteworthy period as Brett Mydland will not live to see the next year :( .

The sound of these shows is as good as it gets: clean and crisp with great instrument separation and a depth to the frequencies; crank it up on your home stereo and you can imagine the Dead are right there playing for you! BTW, their double-disc live release Without A Net features music from this era as well, and has long been one of my favorite official live releases since it came out in the early 1990s, when I was but a young, earnest, newly-enamored Deadhead.

Shows from the box set are 3/16/90 Capital Centre (Landover , MD), 3/19/90 Hartford Civic Center, 3/22/90 Copps Coliseum (Hamilton, Ontario), 3/26/90 Knickerbocker Arena (Albany, NY), 3/30/90 Nassau Coliseum (Uniondale, NY) and 4/2/90 The Omni (Atlanta, GA).

DJ Fundi took it upon himself to comb through the more than 20 hours of live Dead, finding favorite moments, sweet ballads and stellar jams, then blending them together in to two different "highlight mixes" that present favorite Dead songs played extremely well. It is sequenced and mixed so as to emulate what you might hear at a show, though it is a fantasy show jam-packed with all of the goodies and none of the….less likable or tired songs. Lots of Jerry here, as you might imagine, alongside Bobby, Phil and Brett singing their best songs too. Everyone sounds just
great here.

Harvest Moon

Hard to believe but this marks our 80th episode here at the Podcast Cafe! That is a hell of a lot of music mixes streaming in to your home, your ears, your mind, your soul, and its been nothing but a pleasure to serve up the freshest blends for the people since 2007.

With autumn in full effect here in the Pacific Northwest, we concocted up a Harvest Moon mix, conceived of on the full moon earlier this month. It features highlights of some really, really good recent releases we've been enjoying lately, albums that no doubt will be populating our Favorites of 2012 list at the end of the year. The styles and genres vary, but as per usual, DJ Fundi has deftly blended them together into this smooth cocktail of mostly-mellow sounds (with some surprising exceptions, of course) —an inspired session blending the old with the new in a journey of sound, lyric & song. From acoustic to glitch, blues to grunge, americana folk to hipster anthems.

Pour up another hot toddy — we recommend grinding your own cinnamon fresh — and enjoy!
