Tom Robbins reading at Boundary Bay Brewery in Bellingham, 2009

Author Tom Robbins reads from "B is for Beer" — his "children's book abut beer" — appropriately at Boundary Bay Brewery in Bellingham, Washington on May 5, 2009. I get to interview Robbins and field audience questions at minute 15 — a peak life experience for sure! Thanks to Scott Glackman for shooting this video -- just discovered it after 5 years!

Scenes from Summer Meltdown

Here are three videos I shot on my iPhone and lightly edited from the 13th annual Summer Meltdown Festival, held in Darrington, Washington. Good times, great music!

… and here's a video from the crew that brought an amazing late-night dance tent light installation:

Emancipator videos by Moontroll

I've been playing around with video editing lately, as well as the new album from Emancipator. Here are some fun videos I've come up with….

….and two more from before I got fancy:

Seriously, his new album "Dusk to Dawn" is one of the most beautiful suites of soul music I have ever heard!

Three different flavors of "Civilian"

I think Wye Oak's song "Civilian" is one of the best songs of the past decade, easy. I can't necessarily explain or quantify this statement. I just know it. Lately, I've been getting a Neil Young with Crazy Horse feeling from the tune, both lyrically and musically. Her guitar solo at the end of the electric version is simply one of the purest expressions my ears have heard in a very long time. And the words…..they really get to me deep down. Bless.

I am nothing without pretend
I know my thoughts
Can't live with them
I am nothing without a man
I know my faults
But I can hide them

I still keep my baby teeth
In the bedside table with my jewelry
You still sleep in the bed with me,
My jewelry, and my baby teeth

I don't need another friend
When most of them
I can barely keep up with
I'm perfectly able to hold my own hand,
but I still can't kiss my own neck

I wanted to give you everything
but I still stand in awe of superficial things
I wanted to love you like my mother's mother's mothers did
Civilian

Father John Misty

Love, love, loving this new record from Father John Misty on SubPop, aka J. Tillman, aka the former drummer of the Fleet Foxes. Bought the vinyl edition this week and it was a great investment -- the recording techniques and strategies cry out for analog, and check out this beautiful and insane packaging too. Got a feeling this record will be on a lot of Best of 2012 lists 6 months from now….

RJD2 on stage, 4/10/10

RJD2 tore up the Wild Buffalo in Bellingham to a packed house on the 58th stop of his 59-city tour. Mixing new songs from his album "The Collossus" with older favorites from "Deadringer" and "The Horror," Rambling John played an array of turntables, mixing boards, computers, gadgets and guitar and sang too. A good time was had by all!

And here's a RJD2 on-air radio mix from 2004 for your funky enjoyments: www.podcastcafe.org/freestyle/RJD2-BreezeblockMix-2004.mp3
